The pumpkin is a natural product form the Peruvian Andes region. The workshops that work with these pumpkins are located in Huancayo. There, the tradition originated during the pre-Inca-period, when pumpkins were used as dinnerware. Nowadays, pumpkins are still used for these as well as many other purposes. They are for instance used for bags, jewelry boxes, masks and musical instruments. As it is a natural product, the shape cannot be influenced and thus every piece is unique.
In Peru, there are competitions between the different handicraft villages as well as the individual artists at regular intervals. Special skills and capabilities are needed to decorate the pumpkin products.
